We take very seriously our commitment to our community and to the environment; sustainability is and always has been a key factor in how we conduct our business.
Everything is made fresh to order, using natural ingredients (except where food coloring is requested by the customer for custom decoration, and we use natural food colors where possible). Our cakes and truffles are made with organic eggs, dairy, and sugar and MallowDrama uses locally grown fruits, vegetables, and dairy products and other organic ingredients when possible. Vegan and gluten-free cakes and truffles are available upon request, as are cakes and truffles made entirely from organic ingredients.
We have looked at every aspect of our business to implement practices that minimize its impact on the environment -- from recycling and composting to selection of ingredients and supplies to minimize packaging, and much more. We choose reusable alternatives to disposable products (such as cloth dish towels instead of paper towels) and look for items that are made with recycled content or otherwise eco-friendly for supplies and tools in our kitchen and in our office. We always look for products with minimal packaging and, where packaging is necessary, look for those that can be recycled or composted. In our own products, we use minimal packaging; our bakery boxes and cupcake liners are compostable. In the kitchen, MallowDrama composts all of its kitchen scraps and recycles as much as possible. Since our products are made to order, there is minimal waste. We use natural soaps and detergents, and our chef's jackets, company t-shirts, and kitchen towels are made from organic cotton or bamboo. To conserve our energy, our appliances and light bulbs are energy-efficient, we use many handmade processes are used (rather than automation), and our thermostat is set higher in the summer and lower in the winter.
MallowDrama also supports its community through frequent donations and fundraisers. For the past two years, we have held annual fundraising events for Reston Interfaith and Share Our Strength, as well as events for local community and high school theater groups and Cupcake Mission (for Michael J. Fox Foundation). We often donate cakes and/or gift certificates to local events and organizations, including for Reston's Founder's Day, the opening of Reston's Nature House, Reston Community Players, Reston Interfaith, PRS, and others.
For clients who are asking their guests to make charitable donations in lieu of buying gifts, we have a special offer: let us know that you have made this request for your event when you order your cake (or other items), and you can choose a 10% contribution from MallowDrama to the charity of your choice, or a 10% discount off of your order. Minimum order of $300 before tax and delivery is required to receive contribution or discount. Maximum charitable contribution or discount from MallowDrama is $100. This offer can not be applied to prior orders.
If you would like to request a donation for your organization, please contact us by e-mail at info@mallowdrama.com at least 30 days prior to your event (2-3 months in advance is suggested) with the following information:
- name of organization and IRS designation (i.e., Is the organization a nonprofit?)
- contact name and phone number
- type of event and theme, if any
- date, time, and location of event
- expected number of attendees
- type of donation being requested (e.g., cake, cupcakes, gift certificate, sponsorship) and any specific design elements or special requests
- date by which donation must be received (or, for gift certificate requests, desired expiration date)
- details of any recognition (e.g., advertising, marketing, promotions, event signage, media outreach) for donors
We will review and consider all requests that we receive and will inform you at least 3 weeks prior to your event whether we will be able to make a donation to your organization at this time.
